Let’s ACT: Pelican Park High School shines in energy efficiency competition

The City has praised learners and educators for their participation in its Energy Efficiency Schools Programme, part of the Cape Town Future Energy Festival. Pelican Park High School was honoured with the top prize, receiving a R15 000 HVAC voucher awarded to the school’s learners and supervising teacher. Second place went to Groenvlei High School, with Vista Nova High School coming in third.

‘We’re proud to honour our learner-leaders, especially during Youth Month. The Future Energy Festival was designed to do more than simply teach facts about electricity and energy use. It was created to bring learning to life. Through interactive plays, workshops, and practical activities aligned with the school curriculum, learners were encouraged to think critically about the energy challenges facing our city and our country, while also discovering that they have the power to be part of the solution,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, while speaking at the prize-giving.

The poster competition celebrated the achievements of learners from nine participating high schools across Cape Town, with awards presented to those who placed in the top three. The schools were assessed on the creativity of their poster designs, as well as their ability to articulate energy efficiency practices and sustainable energy solutions.

The Cape Town Future Energy Festival is a city-wide movement to equip all residents with the information to make better energy choices. By providing community members with knowledge, practical tools and inspiring experiences, the festival aimed to help households while creating awareness about the changing energy landscape and climate impacts.
 
‘The festival recognises a simple but powerful truth: The energy future of our city belongs to all of us. Whether we are residents, businesses, government, educators or learners, every one of us has a role to play in creating a more sustainable, resilient and energy secure future.
 
‘When we visit schools across Cape Town, we are not only sharing information, we are creating opportunities. We are helping young people understand that the decisions they make today can influence the future of their communities tomorrow. And there could not be a more fitting time to have this conversation than during Youth Month.

Congratulations to every school that participated in the Energy Efficiency Schools Programme. Prizes:
First place - Pelican Park High School - R15 000 Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) voucher.
Second place - Groenvlei High School - R5 000 stationery voucher.
Third place - Vista Nova High School – R3 000 stationery voucher.
